Street Evangelism Outreach Shares Hope Door to Door

There is a kind of ministry that does not wait for people to come to it. It goes to them — to the street, to the doorstep, to the marketplace — because that is often where the person who would never seek out a church actually is. This is the conviction behind the quarterly street evangelism outreach organized through the ministry, and this June's effort was one of the most encouraging in recent memory.

More than forty volunteers — drawn from several age groups and several local churches — gathered early in the morning for prayer and a brief word before dividing into teams and spreading across the target neighborhoods. They went two by two, carrying Bibles, gospel tracts, and a simple willingness to listen. Some doors did not open. Some conversations were brief. But many more were not: neighbors who had been waiting for someone to ask about their lives, elderly men and women who wanted prayer, young people carrying questions they had not known where to take. The volunteers reported more than thirty homes where they were invited inside to sit and pray.

One young woman on the outreach team described the day as "the most alive I have felt in my faith in years" — a sentiment echoed by several others. Outreach of this kind keeps the faith from becoming merely private. It reminds the whole community of believers that the Gospel is not a secret to be guarded but a gift to be shared, and that sharing it costs little more than an afternoon and the willingness to knock on a door.
